Forward A More Perfect Union

Forward A More Perfect Union - June 26 to July 5, 2026

In some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation.”

Martin Luther King, Letter from the Birmingham Jail

We have set up this alternative blog post to enable us to recycle some out of date literature from last year's TIDE effort. There are some gaps in the layout we're still working to remove, so scroll down across them to reach all the content, for go to the current post on the Daily Kos, which will be full updated at https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2026/4/13/2377713/community/july-4-illuminate-the-radiant-stars-of-love-and-brotherhood-in-sc/

Charleston, SC, USA– July 4th 2026 cannot be defined as the MAGA victory celebration Donald Trump and his billionaire masters have planned. Progressives in the SC Lowcountry can work together to build a stronger community, better able to carry the work of constructive resistance forward.

June 28 (Sunday) is the 250th anniversary of the American victory over the British fleet in Charleston. June 28 is celebrated locally as Carolina Day. The news of the victory at Charleston gave the Continental Congress the credibility to issue the Declaration of Independence a week later (it took most of that week for the news to reach Philadelphia).

We can magnify the impact of our message and solidify the cohesion and energy of the Lowcountry’s progressive community. A commemoration focused on reinvigorating and continuing the American struggle for a democratic republic that will be more diverse, equitable and inclusive over the next fifty years in which we will face global challenges which can only be resolved through cooperation and transition to a sustainable economic and environmental reality. Our commemoration could focus on the power and promise of the First Amendment

Leadership

Leadership of this coalition effort includes representatives connected with the Lowcountry's largest progressive peace and social justice organizations who have participated in the organization of the largest demonstrations held in our area in over 50 years.

Nine Days to Remember and Reform

Our nine day commemoration and response will begin on Friday, June 26. The commemoration will continue with Lowcountry Progressive Faith Communities holding events on Sunday, June 28, on Carolina Day. Other such as a walking tour, panel discussion and demonstration will be held during the week. The commemoration would wind up with a July 4th. Evening picnic and a community potluck the following day.

The picnic would focus on community building with activity tents sponsored by local progressive organizations. It would feature a progressive musical presentation, a costume contest and readings drawn from the American progressive trandition like MLK’s letter from the Birmingham Jail, Thomas Pain’s the Crisis and We begin with freedom of religion and end with an exercise of the right to peacably assemble, both enshrined in the First Amendment. See a draft flyer promoting the July 4 Picnic, location TBA

While most of the events will not be a formal demonstration, we already know they will attract huge attention. The schedule is in development now.

Read the detailed calendar in development. https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0?cid=MTQ3M2IxNjRkOTU2ZmIzNDU0MDUzOTQ5MWVkZGE1Njg0YTQ2NzJhZDI5MTUzYjJiNGIxOGRhNGU3YTNlM2FhNkBncm91cC5jYWxlbmRhci5nb29nbGUuY29t

In addition to the scheduled events, look for popup events around the Lowcountry promoted with the #chsresist hashtag.

Will this make a Difference?

Even the suggestion of a commemoration like this attracts immediate, negative attention from local MAGA elements, who want to exert a proprietary control over this historic holiday. Much of their attention is focused on a Trump centered series of major events in DC, which may struggle to draw a crowd. We know MAGA groups across the country are attempting to bus large numbers of people to DC to avoid an embarrassment. Trump has designate Charleston (The only major Revolutionary American City in a red state with a Republican Mayor) as one of four major places to serve as a focus of his national celebration and major MAGA figures are expected in the Lowcountry.

We cannot leave the determined, hard working progressives on the SC Lowcountry to struggle through this holiday surrounded by MAGA insult and delusion financed by their own tax money. I have already heard the MAGA complaints that this is divisive and we should unify with them. What they propose is surrender and complicity, a compromise MAGA has already made by accepting the rule by billionaires and a forever war they were opposed to. MAGA has the right to hold picnics under the 1st amendment. We do too.

We are looking for people who want to help build and coordinate this effort. Organization needs to begin now with it being completed by Memorial Day. We’ll be able to engage the supportive public throughout June, including the many Juneteenth events.

We are happy to hear from anyone with input.
